Taking Care of Business: The Art of Public Speaking
Whether the thought of public speaking sounds exciting, or dreadful, we all have to do it at one time or another. And, like many things, it takes practice to get better and more comfortable. Come hear public speaking advice/tips from Matt Rothrock. Matt serves as the Student Success Coordinator for IUPUC. This work involves coordinating tutoring, supplemental instruction, and disability services for students on the Columbus campus.
Matt received a BA in English from IUPUC in 2008 and received his MA in Applied Communication Studies from IUPUI in October 2019. He has also coached the Columbus East High School Speech Team since 2007. Having been both a former competitor for the team and a coach, he is privileged to help students find their voices and tell their stories through the activity. Given his success as a coach, he was inducted into the Indiana High School Forensics Association Hall of Fame in 2018 and is a Diamond-level coach in the National Speech and Debate Association.
He has also helped immigrant women in Columbus tell their stories through a grant from the Heritage Fund: the Community Foundation of Bartholomew County entitled “Experiencing Our Town: In the Words of Women Immigrants in Columbus, Indiana”. He also co-hosts two high school speech tournaments and serves as co-chair of the IUPUC SpeakEasy every semester.
