Department:          Parks and Recreation 
Reports to:           Associate Director of Recreation
Salary Range:         $56,862 - $79,976 per year
FLSA:                Full Time, Salary Exempt, Safety Sensitive
Supervises:          10-15 Part-Time Employees and 5-10 Independent Contractors

Summary of Functional Responsibilities:
  • Plan, organize, implement, promote, manage, and evaluate in cooperation with and under the supervision of the Associate Director of Recreation, the department’s fitness, health wellness facilities, programs, and memberships.
  • Manage day-to-day office administration responsibilities.
  • Supervise part-time staff and independent contractors in the areas of personal trainers, fitness instructors and customer service staff. 
     
Specific Duties of the Position: 
  • Oversee the daily operations of the AEI Fitness Center at NexusPark, Child Watch at NexusPark, and the Teaching Kitchen at NexusPark. Operations include membership sales and management; program implementation; reporting and tracking; inventory; creation of and adherence to policies, procedures, and standards; oversee the use, care, operation, maintenance, and record keeping of all fitness equipment; budget tracking; invoicing; ensure facility cleanliness and safety standards are being adhered to; and complete daily opening and closing operations.
  • Recruits, supervises, and evaluates fitness center coaches, part-time staff, volunteers, and independent contractors.
  • Monitor industry trends by participating in professional organizations, attending conferences and workshops, benchmarking other fitness and wellness programs, and subscribing to relevant research publications. Explore creative options to implement those trends by evaluating the feasibility of implementation.
  • Encourage fitness, health & wellness through collaborative programming with other community partners as well as department staff. Collaborate with said partners and staff to program and run the NexusPark teaching kitchen, in cooperation with other parks full-time and part-time staff.
  • Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement with customers. Promptly respond to public inquiries, concerns, and complaints to resolve issues and improve customer service.
  • Develop and implement long range plans and strategies. Develop and implement annual goals and objectives.
  • Plan and prepare a yearly budget for the fitness, health & wellness division in cooperation with the Associate Director of Recreation and the Associate Director of Business Services.
  • Actively participate in various board and committee meetings (level of responsibility varies).
  • Assist with the management and updating of media content on the department social media and website platforms specific to fitness, health & wellness programs.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in a fitness/wellness field or closely related field (i.e., Exercise Science, Health Education, Recreation, Therapeutic/Adaptive Recreation, Physical Education, etc. or equivalent) and one year full-time professional wellness/recreation programming experience is preferred.
  • Three (3) or more years’ increasingly responsible experience in the following areas: management, fitness center operations, health and wellness program development and management, adaptive programming or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
  • Relevant continuing education and professional experience certification with one or more of the following:  ACSM (Aerobics & Fitness Association of America), NSCA (National Strength & Conditioning Association), AFPA (American Fitness Professionals Association), ACE (American Council on Exercise), NSHC (National Society of Health Coaches), AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association or America), CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) or equivalent preferred.
  • Willingness to complete the Certified Functional Strength Coach Level 1 Course.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certified or the ability to do so upon hire.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license or ability to obtain one immediately and good driving record, sufficient to be covered by city insurance.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk to hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
 
Judgment: 
  • Work is of a high degree of difficulty and complexity and is performed under the general direction of the Associate Director of Recreation, with considerable latitude granted to exercise independent judgment.
                                               
Supervisory Responsibility: 
  • Directly supervise part-time and temporary instructors and staff for the fitness center and teaching kitchen, as needed for assigned programs and activities.
  • May also supervise volunteers and community partners. 
 
Working Conditions:
  • Schedule is fluid with the expectation that there will be evening, weekend, and possible holiday work. Position allows for weekly flex hours when the workload permits. This position is on-call (unless arranged otherwise to ensure coverage) and will be provided with a city phone to ensure they can be reached.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a highly fast-paced environment, required attention to detail, flexibility, and adaptability. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • OSHA-compliant work environment regarding CDC COVID-prevention guidelines.
  • In the event of community-impacting weather conditions, the employee may be called upon to support departmental and citywide response efforts, which may include reporting to work outside of normal hours.
 
Must reside in Bartholomew County or adjoining county within six (6) months of employment.
 
This position is Safety-Sensitive and is subject to the City’s Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Program which includes: pre-employment testing, random testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing, and annual BMV checks for all drivers.
